Fernando Sontay
Human Services
Fernando Sontay is hoping his human services degree leads him down a path of helping people and improving his community.
"I am tired of seeing individuals and communities suffer," Sontay said. "Children, adults, and friends, in some shape or form, are all affected by our society. Our society is changing rapidly, and we need empathy, kindness, and humanity more than ever. I believe that anyone can make a difference in our communities if our hearts, mind, and soul are in the right place."
Sontay graduated high school in the spring of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic was at its peak. He was unsure of what to do after high school and he decided on enrolling in Delaware Tech to pursue a college degree so he had a solid foundation for his future.
"My time at Delaware Tech gave me the knowledge, experience, and strength to pursue my passions to improve as a student and a person," he said. "During my time here, I have become more vocal about what I want to see change in the world."
One thing Sontay has experienced over the past few years is a lot of personal growth. He said he initially felt like he was a leader through actions, but now he is discovering how he can be more of a vocal leader and make change through his words.
"Words carry as much weight as action," he said. "Words can inspire, encourage growth, and challenge others. I want to be more capable of talking under great pressure, and I think that I am learning how to be more vocal at Delaware Tech."
"You have to allow yourself to get challenged," Sontay added. "Allow yourself to get challenged by your peers or teachers, because it can bring great insight into your life. Sometimes we are too comfortable in our own viewpoints, we do not allow ourselves to see the perspectives that can benefit and change us. It will be hard or uncomfortable, but from that, you can grow up to be a better student and person."
Sontay said he was very appreciative of the SEED Scholarship Program, which helped him afford to attend Delaware Tech.
"It helped me save money and understand that everything helps a student try to achieve their degree," he said. "It helped me from not getting stressed out about where I am going to get the money from and other issues that I could potentially face if I did not have the SEED Scholarship."
After graduation, Sontay said he is interested in pursuing whatever path or job opportunity arises that allows him to continue to follow his dreams.
"Whatever career offers me the best chance to provide individuals and communities with a chance of healing, learning, and change, I will take it with both hands," he said.
