Jacquelyn “Jax” Hackett is attending Delaware Tech to merge multiple interests – nursing, science, and softball.
“I have always wanted to be a nurse since I was little,” Hackett said. “My mom was a nurse and I always looked up to her. I also enjoy learning anatomy and physiology, and I thought if I was good at learning the subjects this would be a really good way to help people.”
Besides pursuing a career in nursing and providing the chance to continue playing softball, Hackett said the ability to stay in Delaware and the affordability of Delaware Tech is what made it the clear first choice for her.
“The SEED Scholarship was really appealing to me because I did not want to have student loans or be in debt after I graduate college,” she said. “It has helped pay tuition is a huge way.”
During her time at Delaware Tech, Hackett said she has felt herself mature by becoming more independent and responsible. Her first year also reinforced her love for nursing. The only thing she had to do was balance being a student-athlete with pursuing a challenging degree program.
“I haven’t faced many obstacles during my time,” she said. “I have just had to juggle school and softball, but I have been doing that my whole life. The only added thing is having to make up classes or labs when traveling for games.”
After graduation, Hackett plans to continue pursuing her career in nursing. She would like to fully follow in her mother’s footsteps by becoming a labor and delivery nurse.
“I’ve always loved kids ad my mom always talked about how experiencing the miracle of life every day was amazing,” Hackett said. “I’m sure watching mothers meeting their babies for the first time will be enjoyable.”
